Frequently Asked Questions

There are many types of yoga.  What is unique about Kundalini Yoga?

The type of yoga that we teach focuses on positions and movements that most people can do from the very first day.  Our emphasis is on the breathing and meditation, and not on difficult postures.  Most of our exercises consist of gentle movements that are coordinated with the breath.  These are designed to stretch the body gradually and smoothly,  and to stimulate the circulation.  All our classes end with a deep relaxation.  Kundalini Yoga is more than a system of exercises, but a powerful tool for experiencing awareness.

What will Kundalini Yoga do for me?

Kundalini Yoga is a safe and comprehensive system of exercise, breath control, and meditation.  It works to strengthen and balance all parts of the body:  nervous system, glands, immune system, and circulation.  It increases your mental clarity, strengthens your connection to your spiritual self, and gives you a deep inner calm and balance.

Who can practice Kundalini yoga?

Everyone can practice Kundalini Yoga.  Over the past 30 years we have had all sorts of people come and enjoy the yoga experience:  grandparents, great-grandparents, children, paraplegics, pregnant women, people in recovery, etc.  No one has ever had a negative reaction to the yoga.  People find that the yoga helps them to relax and get more enjoyment from their lives.

How can Kundalini Yoga help me handle stress?

Kundalini Yoga is an ancient science that has been refined over thousands of years in helping men and women live to their highest potential.  When stress is handling us, instead of us handling stress, it is usually because we have lost our inner balance.  While we have little effect in changing our outer environment, we can significantly shift our inner environment by the practice of yoga and meditation.  Then the stresses of our life seem to roll off our backs instead of settling on our shoulders and weighing us down.

What is the Awareness Center?

Established in 1974, the Awareness Center has been teaching Kundalini Yoga and Meditation continuously since that time in the Pasadena area.  It is the local center for 3HO (Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization).  3HO is an international association dedicated to bringing Kundalini Yoga to the world.  The basic philosophy of 3HO affirms that by using the body and mind through exercise, breath, and meditation, you can balance and revitalize your nerves and glands, and bring harmony and peace to your life.

Who is Yogi Bhajan?

In 1969, Yogi Bhajan came to this country to teach Kundalini Yoga.  While there were many Indian yoga masters who were already teaching other forms of yoga, he was the first to bring this type of yoga to the West.  Unlike other spiritual teachers from India, he made it clear from the very beginning that he did not come to gather disciples, but to train teachers.  He has sent his students all over the world, on every continent, to set up local 3HO teaching centers to spread the basic techniques of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation.

What is the relationship of Kundalini Yoga to the Sikh faith?

Kundalini Yoga is a non-demoninational practice.  Since 1969, when Yogi Bhajan started to teach this type of yoga, people of all faiths have practiced these techniques without any contradiction between their yoga practice and their religion.  In fact, most people report that the Kundalini Yoga deepens their spiritual committment to whatever religion or path that they follow.  In addition to being a master of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan is also a minister of the Sikh religion.  Over the years, some of his yoga students also made the decision to follow the spiritual path of Sikhism.  The basic tenets of Sikhism areto worship one God, to live righteously, to work by the sweat of your brow, and to rise in the early morning and chant God's name.  There is a great deal of overlap between the philosophy of Kundalini Yoga and the tenets of Sikhism, but they are not the same.
